The Grandma Hustle: A look at Physical and Financial Abuse of Elders

    Our Speaker: Alex M. Scott

This presentation aims to highlight trends of criminal activity affecting the fastest growing population in the United States. There are currently more than five million elder abuse victims in the United States, affecting one in ten adults over the age of 60. We'll study examples of financial fraud and physical abuse, and discuss ways you can help protect our elder citizens. Because whether it's mass marketing schemes, sweepstakes scams, or bait letters, there's one thing we know for a fact: fraudsters are perfecting the Grandma Hustle.

Alex Scott is an Assistant District Attorney with the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office, assigned to the Economic Crimes Unit. He primarily prosecutes financially motivated offenses, including abuse against elder and dependent adults.

During his six years as a prosecutor, Alex has taken more than 40 adult criminal cases to jury verdict, including multiple homicide prosecutions. His successful prosecution in State v. Willis—where two brothers were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to the Hard 50—occurred before he turned 30. Alex has also argued before the Kansas Court of Appeals on several occasions.

Alex graduated from the University of Missouri in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Psychology. In 2012, he received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, graduating Cum Laude.

When he’s not in the courtroom, Alex enjoys fishing, traveling, and maintains a 7-handicap. A native Missourian, he’s a Chiefs, Royals, and Missouri Tigers fan. He currently resides in Olathe with his wife, Hallie, and their dog, Dobby.

Note: if you are unable to attend this CLE, Mr. Scott is also presenting this as a webinar for NALA. Registration for that webinar can be found at https://www.nala.org/courses/grandma-hustle-look-physical-and-financial-abuse-elders.
