Job Opportunity: Experienced Litigation Paralegal (May 26, 2023)

Overland Park law firm seeking an experienced litigation paralegal.  Candidate will be working with attorneys on all phases of federal and administrative litigation: including drafting pleadings (including Petitions, Answers, Affidavits, etc.) filing pleadings, preparing discovery responses, preparing document productions, preparing exhibits for depositions, hearings, motions, and more.  Candidate must be highly organized, have a strong attention to detail, and possess excellent communication skills.  This position requires very strong computer skills (Word, Outlook, E-Filing, tables of contents/authorities, Adobe, and Excel).  Litigation support experience as well as docketing and tracking all dates is required and experience with file maintenance software (FileSite) and Lexis Nexis is preferred.  Please send resume and salary requirements to Valerie Wright at vwright@hoveywilliams.com .  Salary requirements must be included with your resume.

Position Requirements:
· At least 5-8 years paralegal experience in civil litigation or closely-related practice areas.
· Very organized and detail-oriented, with excellent time management and proofreading skills.
· Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
· Confidence in ability, and desire, to quickly learn, and work independently with, new software programs and new technologies.
· Ability to work independently (after training) and meet expected deadlines in fast paced environment.
· E-filing experience with the varying court systems (JIMS, Case.net, eFlex, CM/ECF/Pacer, etc.).

Physical and Other Requirements:
· Lift and/or carry 30lbs.
· Stand and/or sit for extended periods of time.
· Valid US Driver’s License and reliable personal transportation for commuting and for work related travel (minimal).

Not Required but Very Beneficial:
· Proficiency with MacOS (10.1 or newer) operating system(s) and programs, including Mail and Numbers.
· Prior experience with Tabs billing/timekeeping system.
· Prior experience with Dropbox Pro, or similar web based secure file-sharing programs.
· Familiarity with Westlaw legal research.
· Experience supporting attorney(s) at hearings or trials, including document/exhibit management.
· Paralegal Certificate.

Primary Responsibilities:
· Work closely as a team with other paralegals and staff to provide excellent client service.
· Work closely with partner attorney (and any associates) to proactively handle all phases of litigation including initiation, response, discovery, depositions, motions, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
· Proactively coordinate and monitor partner attorney’s weekly and daily calendar and deadlines, and work with partner attorney to ensure timely compliance with all case or client deadlines.
· Coordinate with partner attorney regarding proactive oversight and tracking of entire case status and progress on all assigned matters, including both litigation and non-litigation matters.
· Draft correspondence, pleadings, discovery requests, discovery responses, and other written submissions for attorney approval, as assigned.
· Coordinate, oversee and handle electronic filing and service of process, as needed.
· Proactively monitor and update monthly file review and status notes on all active cases.
· Work with clients and partner attorney to coordinate and/or handle document collection, organization, and summaries for all partner attorney’s cases.
· Work with clients and partner attorney to coordinate and/or handle organization and accessibility of all case documents for all partner attorneys’ cases.
· Prepare deposition summaries, as needed and assigned.
· Coordinate and/or handle preparation of documents and exhibits for all purposes, in both litigation cases and non-litigation matters, including preparation of notebooks and exhibits as necessary for hearings, depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
· Appear with partner attorney at hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trials, as assigned, to handle coordination, availability, and electronic presentation of all documents and exhibits.
· Assist attorneys with Pro Bono case work under firm’s Pro Bono Initiative, as assigned.
· Periodically review and update case management policies & procedures with managing attorneys.
· Coverage of legal assistant, office assistant, and/or other paralegal duties during absences, or otherwise whenever workloads require.
· Anything else as needed or assigned to provide great client service and representation.

Hours, & Benefits:
· This is a non-exempt position. Work week is based on 37.5 hours. Hours worked over 40 are rare, but when needed are paid at one-and-one-half times hourly rate.
